Background and history of the organisation

The Sustainable Markets Intelligence Center (CIMS – Centro de Inteligencia sobre Mercados Sostenibles) began as a private initiative developed by the Latin American Center for Competitiveness and Sustainable Development (CLACDS - Centro Latinoamericano para la Competitividad y el Desarrollo Sostenible) of INCAE, the leading business school in Latin America. This initiative came about after research on the subject of competitiveness and sustainable development conducted by these institutions revealed that a lack of (affordable) market intelligence was one of the key factors limiting the growth of business opportunities for small Latin American companies in agribusiness. Moreover, emerging trends in overseas markets such as Europe and the USA demanding more sustainably-sourced products indicated a market opportunity for those who both had access to this information and were in a position to adapt.

CLACDS, with INCAE’s blessing, proposed the creation of CIMS. The Foundation was legally established on March 7, 2003, to provide the private sector in Latin America with vital information on market access for sustainable products and services, and to forge linkages with market opportunities overseas.
